Government Grants and their Benefactors
Government grants consist of a previously designated amount of funds which are disbursed from one party - usually a governmental department, foundation, or trust fund - to a recipient who is typically a business or educational institution. An individual also may be considered in some cases. In order to receive a grant, the hopeful recipient must first submit a proposal to the party who will be dispersing the funds. Often, the potential recipient will submit a proposal in order to fund a project, open up a new business or help the victims of natural disasters in their recovery efforts.
In the United States, government grants will most often come from a wide range of federal departments or an even wider range of public and private trusts. All different types of foundations may be able to give them as well. These various trusts and foundations may number in excess of eighty-eight thousand and may distribute more than forty billion dollars every year, according to the Foundation Center.
Government grants are also issued to students who wish to go to college and are in need of financial help. Most students are very eager to be issued funds that do not need to be repaid, rather than having to take out personal loans to pay for the entire cost of school enrollment. While many federal college government grants are available to nearly any student who is able to hunt them down and apply for them, there are others which are dependent on the student's grades, potential and overall financial status.
In order for most government grants to be approved, the application must first be sent through a stringent review process. This will go through a committee mainly comprised of federal employees and other selected experts in the given field. The student must then compete with the other applicants for the money. The review committee will then evaluate the merits of each proposal and student.
Government grants can also be often given to non-profit groups and organizations involved in training or other similar activities. Most of them are given to specific target groups with specific requirement, such as first-time home buyers, those who need assistance with college, those who hope to open their own business. Those who wish to create a non-profit organization are considered as well. Only those that are felt to exemplify the objective of the government grants will be approved.
In order to receive government grants, it is strongly suggested that you hire a professional to create the proposal. Often, these proposals are created incorrectly when individuals attempt to write them on their own. Sadly, it is very possible that this could ultimately result in rejection from the review committee and, therefore, loss of the funding.
The process of researching is quickly becoming less-than-traditional, and is being replaced by online fund-raising tools. The online fund-raising methods can make the process much less difficult. However, finding possible government grants can still be a long and tedious journey from start to finish which many individuals are not fully prepared for.
